so it has been decreed, so it shall be done

We swear
to always remain
faithful
to pursuing liberty
and undoing tyranny.

So it has been decreed,
so it shall be done.

We swear
to pay homage
to the heroes
who clawed back
the commons
from the hands
of wealthy brutes
who can’t see the wood
for the trees.

So it has been decreed,
so it shall be done.

We swear
to seize all means
at our disposal
so that none may feast
while others starve,
so that none
shall reap
harvests sown
by the hands of others.

So it has been decreed,
so it shall be done.

When dealing
with a deadly wasp,
mercy
is the surest shortcut
to the nearest infirmary.

Let
no one
rise above
their fellow –

So it has been decreed,
so it shall be done.

No hierarchy
is real
unless
it stands up
to scrutiny –
to allow otherwise
is to invite ruin.

So it has been decreed,
so it shall be done.

We who realise
that we are
but one chord
in the symphony
of everything
obey only
one rule:

nobody
is more important
than everyone else.

mooring

some people
weigh you down,
a pair of shoes
cast in cement.

some people
tear you up,
a pair of scissors
forged in hell.

some people
reel you in,
a cinema
full of showstoppers.

some people
cast you out,
baying mobs
bearing pitchforks.

some people
are magic –
when the earth
becomes
an angry tremor,
when the wind
whips your skin,
and the sea
arises from slumber,

the only ones
who matter
will moor you.

no title

As miserable
as a misanthrope
at a party,

I fudge
the numbers
in my head –

the estimates
of just
how much
I am worth
don’t add up.

My understanding
of myself
is limited
to what I am willing
to forgive myself for

If I do not
forgive,
I cannot forget
I cannot repair
the damage
from the hand grenades
going off
in my head –

some of these thoughts
had their pin pulled
ages ago

others
are improvised
explosive devices
cobbled together
with self-deprecation
and a chronic
misunderstanding
of beauty

sometimes
I think
of whether
this will ever stop
and then,
I remember

that it was,
is,
and always will be
my choice.

To live
by the sword
is to not live
at all.
